WARNING!!! WARNING!!!

The United Nations wants to infringe upon your civil rights!

July 9, 2001 has been designated "Small Arms Destruction Day"

Before I give you my take on this situation, let me show you the press release from David Course, public affairs director of the Second Amendment Foundation.

SAF URGES GUN OWNERS: 'UNITE AGAINST THE UNITED NATIONS' JULY 9

BELLEVUE, WA - When the United Nations opens its "Conference on Small Arms and Light Weapons" in New York City on Monday, July 9, gun owners across the country should flood Congress and the White House with calls and letters, demanding that our leaders defend the Constitution and United States sovereignty.

Alan Gottlieb, founder of the Second Amendment Foundation, today issued a call to gun owners from coast to coast to "Unite against the United Nations."

The UN conference is reportedly designed to produce a treaty requiring governments to number, register, license and eventually confiscate and destroy all firearms with the exception of those belonging to police and the military. In conjunction with the opening of this conference, the International Action Network on Small Arms (IANSA) is promoting what it calls "Small Arms Destruction Day."

Gottlieb said the UN conference, and the IANSA effort, are an affront to the Constitution, and its protection of individual rights, including the right to keep and bear arms.

"The Second Amendment has been the cornerstone of American liberty, independence and sovereignty for over two centuries," Gottlieb stated. "Law-abiding firearms owners need to make themselves heard while gun-hating interlopers from around the world gather in our country, on our sacred soil, in an effort to destroy our birthright."

"This is especially important, because this July 4 marks the 225th anniversary of America's Declaration of Independence," Gottlieb continued. "Small wonder the United Kingdom is one of the key backers of 'Small Arms Destruction Day' along with Bali, Brazil and the Netherlands. Evidently there are some in today's UK that remember their history well, and know what free people with guns can do in defense of liberty."

On July 9, SAF Public Affairs Director Dave LaCourse urges gun owners to call the Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and leave messages for their Senators and Congressional representatives.

In addition, LaCourse recommended calling the following numbers to also insist that our sovereign rights be protected:

The White House: (202) 456-1414 or e-mail at: president@whitehouse.gov
Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle at (202) 224-5556
Or e-mail Sen. Daschle at: tom_daschle@daschle.senate.gov
Senate Minority Leader Trent Lott at (202) 224-2708
Or e-mail Sen. Lott at: senatorlott@lott.senate.gov

My take on this whole thing

Well, as you probably guessed, I am totally against this conference and any treaty that would confiscate guns that are privately owned. There are a number of reasons for it.

First, as the press release correctly points out, we are a sovereign nation. The UN has absolutely no right to tell us as citizens of this nation that we cannot own guns. This would be like the UN telling Germans they can't drink beer or Austrians that they can't have schmaltz on their food. I'll wager that more people are killed by alcoholics and high cholesterol than are killed by guns.

Second, Americans are among a small group of people who are constitutionally guaranteed the right to keep and bear arms. Do I need to say more?

Third, in the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia, each of which has had horribly restrictive gun laws passed during the last few years, violent crime has escalated radically and tragically. In the United States, violent crime decreased by 15% last year. It does not take a rocket scientist to figure this stuff out, folks!

Do take the time to call your representatives, and by all means, write and/or e-mail the President. He will respond to pressure.
